Starting in January 2024, Store2Hydro is a four-year initiative funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program. Its primary objective is to optimise electricity storage through the integration of reversible pump turbine technology into current hydropower infrastructures. This strategic approach has the potential to augment European storage capacity by up to 22TWh/y. The project entails validating inventive mechanical solutions for pumped storage and identifying untapped hydropower reservoirs, all in alignment with the objectives of the European Green Deal, while maintaining reservoir volumes. Additionally, the project introduces digital twin technology to enhance monitoring and adaptability to fluctuating renewable energy generation, thereby offering more efficient, cost-effective, and flexible hydropower operations.
